Solving Plastic Pollution: Collaborating with Market Competitors and Like-Minded Companies To Achieve Success

Galleria North

There is currently more than 86 million tonnes of plastic in our ocean, and over 8 million tonnes of new plastic will enter the ocean each year. Plastic that enters the marine ecosystem breaks down into microplastics, which are nearly impossible to remove from the ocean. Instead they become attractive to fish, turtles, birds and other marine species, causing irreparable harm and even death.

To help solve our plastic pollution crisis, NextWave Plastics convenes leading companies and market competitors to develop the first global network of ocean-bound plastics supply chains. Since its launch, NextWave member companies have been demonstrating the viability of integrating ocean-bound plastics into their products and packaging so we can keep plastics in our economy and out of the ocean.

During the panel, companies will share products they have created that permanently lock up ocean-bound plastic, such as Interface’s NetEffects carpet tiles that use Nylon 6 from fishing gear collected in Indonesia and the Philippines; Humanscale’s Smart Ocean Task Chair each of which integrate 2 pounds of Nylon 6 from fishing gear once bound for the waters off the coast of Chile; and HP Inc’s ink cartridges that as of October 2018 have eliminated 12 million single-use plastic water bottles from entering the Caribbean Sea; and more.

Moderated by award-winning NGO Lonely Whale, panelists will discuss with the audience the practicalities and benefits of collaborating with market competitors and cross-industry thought leaders to work toward the same goals, solve the ocean plastic crisis.
